This stage crosses the Lower Bohinj mountains of the Julian Alps, whose ridges are visible ahead. First go down the rather steep slope through the forest, then climb up the ridge again. The Kobla ski slopes can be seen descending into the valley below. Črna prst is famous for its varied Alpine flora and as a vantage point. It lies within the bounds of Triglav National Park.

    continued....
Rudi and his wife Petrovo brdo 2B -
have been mentioned here many times. But i have to second it
They are legends!! Should get inducted in the VA hall of fame. All a Via Alpinist could wish for. Fantastic meal, great accomodation (They also offer bivaque style) Great advice on anything.
Dry shoes the next day over the woodstove which is the center of the house...
Due to 30 mm rain predicted for the next day we made our way to Ljubliana that day and will continue in August.
Looking forward to come back to Rudi. Their email is wrong (outdated ) on the website. It is now zgaga.rudolf@gmail.com

We did the first part (descent) with the last 4 h of daylight out of season on MArch 26, 2024 The route was super slippery due to melting snow. And rain. Really like soap.
Poles would have been necessary. We only had found "sticks/branches.
We didnt try our crampons, for mud they are no good I think. All 3 of us slipped a couple of times during the steep descent through the forest which normally takes 2,5 h .... continued...

Rudi is so kind! you must go there if you need a place to stay, and you can even camp. His wife made us an excellent meal and breakfast. Such a nice place to stay!

There is a brand new water fountain at the planinski dom in petrovo brdo, and a delightful owner too.

Consider calling the hosts at Crna Prst for information - I'm told the ridge walk is 100% impossible at this stage (22 May) because there is so much snow this year. I will make a detour (and curse the fact that I carried 8 days of food for nothing).

There is water at crna prst. It's not officially drinkable but I had 2 liters and I didn't die in horrible suffering, nor had any bad experience with it.

Add: the camping possibility mentioned by Carsten below is a very nice spot, good views a level ground. Didn't stay there myself but met another hiker who did have a good night there.
  • Karsten - 2022-07-04
I've combined R8&R9, me legs simply wanted to keep moving, very doable.
As to Petrovo Brdo there is nothing I could add to Ludoviks comment below - highly recommended!
Rudi even prepared some breakfast for an early start the next day, sort of "room-service" ;)
    Hvala Rudi!

I stayed in Petrovo Brdo at Rudi's (Mountain Lodge Petrovo Brdo) and can only highly recommend this place to future hikers. You are welcomed with great attention and delicacy by Rudi and his wife. The house is full of good vibes, the comfort very satisfactory, the food very good and the breakfast royal. Finally, Rudi's kindness is immense and deep. What to leave refreshed with a very good energy and with a big smile. Thank you Rudi and Irina!!!

Water: faucet at Petrovo Brdo Brt outside in back, creek shortly after, otherwise none on ascent.
Last campsite on ascent is (very roughly) one hour up, after leaving the old Ronan road and walking on a good trail along the hillside, at a small animal breeder club's hut (flat grassy area, great views).

June 15, 2017 A day almost rest for me, having left Petrovo Brdo (see previous step). At the shelter, no shower, but you can wash outside. As in many refuges in Slovenia, no drinking water, it must be ordered in bottles: in fact the karst ground lets infiltrate the water, and no torrent, so take precautions.

In Petrovo Brdo warm welcome , friendly and kind innkeeper ! Great for sleeping and eating great breakfast !
Stage pleasant , wonderful views, easy path .

Bring abundant supply of water from the fountain of Petrovo Brdo.

No water, no shower , only a small bathroom in Crna Prst .

(we walk on it in August. Special thanks to the kind guy of Petrovo Brdo )

Since the automated translation seems to struggle with petersi’s comment, to reassure you here is what he wrote: „The bear which caused some damage years ago in the area has NOT been around for more than two years now.” Happy hiking!

At the hunting lodge, be careful: the route follows a trail NO partly hidden by the foliage, while a wide path marked like O opens before us. Very welcome at the shelter Tcherna Pres.

In Petrovo Brdo, the owner -Radko, will not allow you just to pass his guest-house. He will come after you. Try his excellent Turkish Coffee. It comes together with Radko's own home brewn distillery, on the house: don't refuse! A small glass of this will rocket you up all the way to the Crna Prst! His guest-house also has two rooms. Fill up your water bottle here.

Radko is very enthusiastic to give you all sorts of good advice, like what to do if a brown bear crosses your track! (In short: don't run away -it will come after you, but make yourself big to scare it off). He knows, because the bear is often seen walking through the village: it killed three of his cows earlier this year!
