R136 Chialvetta » Pontebernardo
  |   6h35   |   18.55 km   |   1419 m   |   1621 m

The first stretch of this long stage climbs to the Gardetta pass, along the length of the Unerzio valley from Chialvetta, and skirting round the Rocca Limburny peak. From the pass, surrounded by crumbling defences, the trail climbs all the way to the Rocca Brancia pass. The following descent leads to the road of the Stura di Demonte Valley. Following the road downhill leads to Pontebernardo. This leg is practicable by mountain bike, too from Chialvetta to Pontebernardo (from the Pass of Rocca Brancia you continue towards Colle Oserot and the lakes of Roburent, once you arrive at Argentera you’ll have to go down to Pontebernardo along the main road).

The Posto Tappa (which is Italian for 'Gite d'Etape') here is located in three buildings: The dormitory, a restaurant and a bar with nice terrace.

Just past the Col de Gardetta there is the Rifugio Gardetta. That evening the warden gave a lecture about the dinosaurs that used to live here. And showed some fossils. Nearby there is a war memorial with artifacts of the previous wars.

Step in the direction traveled Viviere (Chialvetta) -> Pontebernardo Sunday, 14/06/2015: almost no snow, neck Gardetta cleared, but some (short) snowfields relatively hard snow (late morning in bad weather) and quite exposed in the climb to Rocca Brancia: we lace up the cleats for the last. Very good markup to the pass Rocca Brancia (Valle Maira), then (Val Stura) old tags and often overgrown trail. Very welcome (and exceptional gourmet meal) at Refuge Viviere and hitchhike without problems for Vinadio in Valle Stura (not Sundays).
